Halloween is such an exciting time for us humans, but it can be a little frightening for our furry friends—and not in a fun way! With all the trick-or-treaters, costumes, decorations, and yummy treats, Halloween brings its own set of challenges for pet owners. But don’t worry! We’ve put together a helpful guide to ensure Halloween is both fun and safe for your beloved dogs and cats, filled with tasty treat ideas, cute costume tips, and essential safety reminders.
1. Spooky (but Safe) Treats for Dogs and Cats
Although we love sweets like candy and chocolate, many of these can be harmful to pets. Instead, consider preparing or purchasing treats that are safe for pets, allowing your furry friend to partake in the Halloween festivities as well! Here are a few suggestions:
Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Biscuits for Dogs
● Ingredients: Pumpkin puree, peanut butter (ensure it’s xylitol-free), whole wheat flour, and eggs.
● Directions: Combine the ingredients, roll out the dough, and cut it into fun Halloween shapes, such as bones or pumpkins! Bake at 350°f (175°c) for about 20 minutes, and
Tuna Crunchies for Cats
● Ingredients: Canned tuna (in water), oat flour, and one egg.
● Directions: Simply mix the ingredients together, shape them into cute little balls, and bake at 350°f (175°c) for 10-12 minutes. Your feline friends will find these treats irresistible, and they’ll be so happy while you enjoy your Halloween candy!
Note: If you’re not feeling up for a DIY project, don’t worry! Many pet stores offer adorable Halloween-themed treats specially designed for dogs and cats. Just be sure to look for the low-sugar, all-natural options!
2. Pet-Friendly Costumes: Keep It Cute and Comfy
There’s nothing cuter than seeing a dog in a pumpkin costume or a kitty sporting a tiny witch hat! However, not all pets enjoy dressing up. When selecting a costume for your furry friend, keep their comfort and safety in mind:
● Choose Lightweight and Simple Options: It’s best to steer clear of costumes with lots of accessories, especially those that might hinder your pet’s movement or vision. Many pets feel super comfortable in a cosy Halloween bandana or collar.
● Try It On a Few Days Early: Give your furry friend time to adapt by letting them wear the costume for short periods leading up to Halloween. This way, they can feel relaxed and get used to their new look!
● Be Mindful of Small Parts: Some costumes come with tiny pieces that could be easily chewed or swallowed. Opt for costumes that don’t have dangling bits, glitter, or trinkets that might be a choking risk.
● Prioritise Safety: Adding reflective tape to costumes can help your pet stand out at night, making them easier to spot by cars and trick-or-treaters alike, especially if you’re out and about during Halloween night.
If your pet looks uncomfortable or uneasy, it’s completely fine to skip the costume. They’ll still be as adorable as ever!
3. Halloween Safety Tips for Pets
Halloween can be a bit much for our furry friends with all the exciting sights, sounds, and visitors around! Here’s how to create a safe and calm environment for them:
● Beware of Candy: Chocolate, xylitol (an artificial sweetener), and raisins are toxic to dogs and cats. Ensure all candy is stored out of reach, and remind trick-or-treaters not to give any of their treats to your pets. Instead, prepare some pet-friendly snacks for them!
● Keep Pets Indoors: Due to the hustle and bustle on Halloween night, it’s best to keep pets inside. Loud sounds, costumes, and unfamiliar faces at the door can cause stress or fear in animals, particularly those not accustomed to such commotion.
● Set Up a Safe Space Establish a cosy “safe zone” where your pet can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. A quiet room with their favourite bed, toys, and a couple of treats can effectively soothe them during the evening’s celebrations.
● Watch Out for Decorations: Pay close attention to candles, jack-o-lanterns, and electrical cords—pets might accidentally tip them over or chew on them. Opting for LED candles instead of real flames can keep your Halloween spooky while ensuring it’s safe for pets.
● Ensure ID Tags Are Updated With all the extra excitement, pets might slip outside unnoticed. Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are current, allowing for a swift reunion if they manage to escape.
4. Fun Ways to Include Your Pet in the Halloween Fun
If your pet is sociable and loves excitement, think about involving them in the Halloween festivities through these activities:
● Pet Trick-or-Treating: Plan a pet-friendly “trick-or-treat” event in your neighbourhood! Join friends with their pets and visit homes that are welcoming to animals for treats, or check out local pet stores that are hosting Halloween celebrations.
● Photoshoots: Make memories with a Halloween-themed photoshoot! Whether your pet is dressed in costume or wearing a seasonal bandana, arrange pumpkins and props to create a fun photo backdrop.
● Pet-Friendly Movie Night: If Halloween night isn’t too busy, enjoy a cozy movie night at home with pet-friendly snacks and a classic Halloween film, like a lighter choice such as Hocus Pocus.
Halloween can be a wonderful time for you and your pets, with a bit of preparation and extra care. By keeping treats safe, ensuring costumes are comfortable, and creating a calm environment, you’re sure to make Halloween enjoyable for everyone, both two-legged and four-legged alike!
Happy Halloween from ROLDA!
Purrl, a young stray Romanian kitten, has already endured incredible amounts of illness at such a young age.
Lying alone on the cold concrete outside an apartment building, poor Purrl was on the brink of death. Barely conscious, severely emaciated and hypothermic, Purrl was hanging on to her last moments. This was when Simona from ROLDA animal rescue partner ‘The Great Catsby’ spotted her. Purrl was so small and motionless, Simona almost tripped over her tiny, unnoticeable body.
Simona delicately and lovingly scooped her up and then rushed her inside, only to discover Purrl was in even worse condition than it first appeared. She was jaundiced, ulcers had taken over her mouth, and the poor little kitten was just skin and bones.
After speaking with the local vet, Simona did everything she could to help Purrl survive the night. She gave her fluids, antibiotics, pain relief, anti-nausea medication, and wrapped her in an electric blanket. In a perfect world, she would have rushed Purrl to the 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic immediately. But with so many starving and sick animals to care for that week, the cost was more than could be afforded.
Thankfully, with care, dedication and determination, Simona helped Purrl survive the night and took her to the clinic the very next morning. As expected, testing and lab work revealed Purrl’s numerous challenges. Inflammation has taken over her tiny body, causing severe damage to her liver and pancreatic functions.

Her mouth remains extremely painful, with severe ulcers, bleeding, and rotting teeth. While she’s receiving pain relief, Purrl is still far too weak to undergo anesthesia for the dental procedures she urgently needs.
The next frightening discovery was that her stool was completely colourless. Even more alarming, her stool contained a significant amount of blood. A fecal sample and abdominal ultrasounds will be conducted to assess the condition of her organs and see if they reveal any further clues.
Right now, Purrl is doing better than when Simona discovered her, but is still in terrible shape. We are doing everything in our power to save this poor fur baby and prevent her suffering.
Purrl is just one of so many innocent animals suffering on the streets every day. With your help, we can not only continue her fight for life, but also be there for the next desperate soul who needs us. Your kind donation is often the crucial difference for cats like Purrl, giving them the chance and care they need.
Summer is all about sunny days, warm breezes, and outdoor fun. However, it also poses unique challenges for our furry friends, particularly for pets and stray animals. Whether you’re a devoted pet parent or a compassionate stray helper, these summer safety tips will help ensure that animals remain safe, comfortable, and happy all season long.
1. Hydration is Key!
Just like us, dogs and cats require plenty of water, particularly during hot weather. Ensure your pets always have access to fresh, clean water, and bring extra along if you go for a walk or a day trip. If you’re caring for strays, consider placing water bowls in shaded spots around your neighbourhood. Monitor their water levels and refill as necessary, especially during peak heat.
Pro tip: Adding ice cubes to the water bowls can help keep the water cooler for longer. Many pets find playing with the ice to be a delightful treat!
2. Find the Shade
When you’re enjoying time outdoors with your furry friend, it’s so important to provide them with a nice shaded area to escape the heat. The direct sunlight can quickly cause overheating, which can be really dangerous for our animal companions. At home, you can create some cosy, shaded spots by using umbrellas, tents, or even a fun blanket canopy in your garden!
For our furry friends living on the streets, you can lend a helping hand by setting up temporary shaded spots with a cardboard box or an old sheet stretched between posts. This little gesture gives them a cool and comfy place to rest away from the sun.
3. Be Mindful of Hot Pavement
The ground warms up rapidly under the summer sun, causing sidewalks and pavement to become extremely hot for sensitive paws. Before you take your pet for a walk, conduct the “pavement test” by pressing the back of your hand against the surface for a few seconds—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
Pro tip: Early mornings and late evenings are the ideal times for walks since temperatures are generally cooler. Also, remember that grass or dirt paths are gentler on paws compared to concrete!

4. Never Leave Pets in the Car
Even on mild days, cars can heat up quickly, almost like ovens! The temperatures inside a parked car can rise alarmingly, putting our furry friends at serious risk of heatstroke. If you have errands to run, it’s best to leave your pet cosy and safe at home, or consider bringing along a friend who can keep them company while you’re away.
For stray animals, if you happen to see one that has wandered into a parked car looking for a bit of shade, it’s kind to alert the owner or gently encourage the animal to come out if it’s safe to do so.
5. Protect Against Pesky Pests
Summer brings along troublesome parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. These pests pose a risk of spreading diseases that can affect both pets and strays. Ensure your pets are current on flea and tick prevention and inspect them after outdoor activities. If you’re assisting strays, look for nearby programs that provide treatments to protect strays from parasites.
Pro tip: Consider planting pest-repellent plants like lavender and mint around your home to naturally fend off mosquitoes.
6. Cool Treats for Hot Days
Who doesn’t love a refreshingly cold treat on a sunny day? Pets adore them, too! You can whip up frozen treats, like peanut butter (without xylitol), in ice cube trays or create delightful “pupsicles” by freezing broth along with small treats. Many cats also appreciate a chilly treat of frozen tuna juice (water-packed, not oil), making for a tasty and refreshing snack.
For our stray animal friends, consider making frozen water bowls. Just drop in small bites of food to offer hydration and a little nutrition, all in one!
7. Keep an Eye Out for Heatstroke Symptoms
Heatstroke can develop rapidly, making it crucial to recognise the warning signs. Symptoms to watch for include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, a racing heartbeat, vomiting, and trouble breathing. If you observe any of these symptoms in your pet, relocate them to a cooler area, provide water, and reach out to a veterinarian right away.
For stray animals, if you notice one displaying symptoms of heatstroke, attempt to move it to a shaded area and give it water. If possible, contact a nearby animal rescue for additional assistance.
8. Be Fireworks-Aware
Summer often brings fireworks, which can be distressing for animals with sensitive hearing. When fireworks are scheduled, keep your pets indoors and set up a tranquil, secure space where they can feel safe.
If you’re caring for strays, consider making calm areas for them in your yard or community, such as cardboard boxes or shelters, where they can seek refuge from the noise.
9. Look Out for Local Summer Dangers
Different areas present unique summer hazards, so familiarise yourself with the specific risks in your region. In some locations, summer might bring snakes or stinging insects. In other regions, certain types of plants or algae can pose dangers to animals. Research what to be aware of, and if you’re near a water source, avoid allowing pets to drink from standing water, as it may harbour harmful bacteria or algae.
10. Spread the Word About Stray Safety
Summer can be especially challenging for strays, so if you’re eager to help, consider sharing these tips with friends and neighbours. Small actions, such as providing water bowls or contacting a rescue if an animal is in trouble, can have a significant impact. You might even host a “Stray Safety Day” in your community to raise awareness and motivate others to get involved.
Wrapping Up
Summer should be an enjoyable and relaxing time for everyone, pets included. With some preparation and care, we can keep both pets and strays safe, cool, and happy throughout the summer. Keep in mind that every small act of kindness contributes to a safer summer for the animals in your life and those that roam our neighbourhoods.
Let’s work together to ensure this summer is filled with fun and safety for all animals.
When the Vet Calls
The phone rings, and my heart already knows what’s coming.
It’s another veterinarian, voice heavy with the weight of an impossible situation. Another injured animal sits in their clinic, caught between hope and heartbreak, while the clock ticks toward a decision no one wants to make.
A Day That Started Like Any Other
Parents had brought their children to enjoy a sunny afternoon at the local park when they noticed him—a dog in the middle of the playground, clearly in pain and growing more agitated by the moment. Concerned for their children’s safety, they called the council for help.
When the dog handler arrived, the full scope of this poor soul’s suffering became clear. Angry, infected wounds circled her neck where a chain had been embedded—likely for months or even years. Her body was shaking with pain and fatigue, but it was the large tumor growing on her belly that made everyone’s heart sink.
No identification. No owner stepping forward. Just another stray whose world of pain had finally intersected with humans who cared enough to help.
The Question That Haunts Every Animal Lover
“We have a dog here,” the veterinarian explained when they called us. “She’s quite young, maybe three or four years old. Under all this suffering, she’s got so much life left in her. But without surgery and treatment, we’ll have to put her to sleep. Can you help?”
How do you answer that call? How do you look at a young, treatable animal and decide whether she gets a chance at the life she deserves, or whether her story ends on a steel table because no one can pay for her care?
This is the Reality Veterinarians Face Every Day
Across Romania, compassionate veterinarians receive injured strays brought in by Good Samaritans who can’t afford the treatment costs. These vets chose their profession because they love animals, but they’re caught in an impossible position: provide free care and risk their business closing, or euthanize animals that could easily be saved.
That’s when they call us. When they call ROLDA.
The Weight of Yes
When that call came about the dog from the playground, we didn’t hesitate. We said yes before we’d even calculated the cost of her surgery, her tumor removal, her wound treatment, her recovery care.
We said yes because that’s what ROLDA is—a network of people who believe that when an animal needs help, we find a way. Even when our budget is stretched thin. Even when we’re not sure how we’ll cover the next emergency call.
We said yes because somewhere out there are people like you who understand that these calls aren’t just about one dog—they’re about the promise that no animal suffers alone when help is possible.

Every Month, Every Call, Every Life
The veterinarian worked with us to keep costs as reasonable as possible—because they care too. The surgery was successful. The tumor was removed. The wounds are healing. That dog who was dying in a playground is now wagging her tail in recovery, probably for the first time in months.
But even as I write this, I know our phone will ring again next week. Another vet, another animal caught between life and death, another split-second decision that determines whether hope wins or gives way to heartbreak.
Your Voice in That Decision
Every time we say yes, it’s not just ROLDA speaking—it’s every monthly supporter who has chosen to be part of these life-or-death moments. Your support doesn’t just fund medical care; it gives us the confidence to answer “yes” when that next call comes.
When the phone rings tomorrow with another emergency, will you be part of the voice that says this animal’s life matters?
Become a monthly supporter and ensure we never have to let cost determine whether an animal lives or dies.
Because every call answered with “yes” is a life transformed—and a reminder that compassion in action can change everything.
At ROLDA UK, we truly believe that every life matters. This inspiring story from Ukraine shines a light on an incredible rescuer, Irina Didur, whose unwavering commitment to helping street animals is transforming lives one rescue at a time. Her most recent mission to save a precious little dog named Busya beautifully illustrates the resilience and love that are essential for caring for animals in urgent need.
A Life of Dedication and Compassion
Irina Didur, a passionate animal rescuer from Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, has devoted many years to saving vulnerable street animals. Her heart is especially soft for those that are injured and in need, and she simply can’t walk past a creature in distress. Irina beautifully exemplifies how one person can truly make a remarkable difference through compassion and dedication.
Meeting Busya: A Little Dog in Big Trouble
On a routine day, Irina spotted a small, frightened dog wandering alone and visibly unwell. She named her Busya, a gentle name for a gentle soul. Despite her initial fear, Busya quickly sensed the kindness in Irina’s touch. With her tail tucked and body trembling, Busya gradually allowed Irina to get closer. Through her quiet patience, Irina gained Busya’s trust and took her to a veterinary clinic to assess the little dog’s condition.
A Dire Diagnosis: Fighting for Busya’s Life
At the veterinarian, Busya was found to have severe enteritis, which leads to inflammation of the intestines. This illness poses a serious risk, particularly for a dog as frail and defenceless as Busya. The veterinary team swiftly initiated intensive treatment to save her life, administering hydration, medication, and vital nutrients. Irina stayed close, providing the comforting reassurances that Busya urgently needed. She is committed to helping Busya recover through nutritious food, medical attention, and abundant love.
Inspiring a Wave of Compassion
Irina’s dedication to Busya showcases her passion for animal welfare and her dream of a world where every stray receives care. Her efforts shine as a beacon of hope within her community, motivating others to embrace animals in need. Each small act of kindness contributes to a better future for strays, both in Ukraine and around the world.
You Can Help Too
Busya’s story is one of many, yet each reflects the urgency and importance of supporting animal rescue efforts. Through ROLDA UK, you can contribute to life-saving missions like Irina’s, providing these vulnerable animals with a second chance at life and love.

● Quiz Night: Host a quiz night at your local pub or community centre. Charge a small entry fee, and consider offering a prize for the winning team!
● Pet Fashion Show: Organise a pet fashion show where pet owners can showcase their furry friends in stylish outfits. Entry fees can go directly to ROLDA UK.
2. Challenge Yourself with a Physical Goal
Taking on a physical challenge can be an incredible way to raise funds and awareness. Here are a few ideas:
● Sponsored Walk or Run: Sign up for a local race, or organise a walkathon. You can encourage friends and family to sponsor your miles to reach your fundraising target.
● Cycling Challenge: Challenge yourself to a bike ride across the countryside or even through the city streets.
● Swimathon: If you love swimming, why not set a distance goal and ask people to sponsor each lap you complete?
3. Leverage Online Fundraising Platforms
Online platforms make it easier than ever to reach a broad audience. Here are some tips to maximise your reach:
● Crowdfunding Campaigns: Set up a campaign on popular platforms like JustGiving or GoFundMe. Share your story about why you’re fundraising for ROLDA UK, and provide updates to keep people engaged.
● Social Media Fundraising: Use platforms like Facebook or Instagram to share your campaign. Make sure to include visuals, such as photos of animals ROLDA has helped or a video message from you explaining your mission.
● Matched Giving: Some companies offer matched donations, doubling the impact of employee contributions. Check if your employer provides this option and encourage coworkers to get involved.
4. Fun and Creative Fundraising Ideas
Fundraising doesn’t always have to be traditional. Think outside the box with these creative ideas:
● Virtual Pet Portraits: If you have an artistic side, offer pet portraits in exchange for donations. People can send you photos of their pets, and you can create a digital or physical portrait using drawings or paintings.
● Charity Garage Sale: Clean out your home and host a charity garage sale to help others. All proceeds can go to ROLDA UK, and it’s a great way to recycle items you no longer need.
● Monthly Pledge Challenge: Encourage supporters to pledge a small monthly donation. Set a goal for the number of pledges you aim to reach, and share regular updates to keep your supporters engaged.
5. Corporate Sponsorships and Partnerships
Teaming up with a business can be a game-changer for fundraising. Here are some ways to get started:
● Reach Out to Local Businesses: Ask if they’d like to sponsor your fundraising challenge or event, or if they can donate a percentage of their sales to ROLDA UK.
● Organise a Workplace Challenge: Encourage your workplace to run a company-wide fundraiser. Departments or teams could compete to raise the most, or take on a collective challenge like a charity run.

Overcoming Common Fundraising Challenges
Fundraising isn’t always easy, and there can be some bumps along the way. Here are a few common challenges and tips on how to tackle them:
● Getting People’s Attention: In a world full of distractions, standing out can be tough. Use compelling visuals, personal stories, and frequent updates to keep your cause fresh in people’s minds.
● Staying Motivated: Fundraising is a marathon, not a sprint. Setting smaller milestones can help keep your motivation high, especially during longer campaigns.
● Handling Rejection: Not everyone will be able or willing to donate, and that’s okay. Focus on those who are interested and supportive, and remember that every small contribution counts.
Conclusion
Fundraising for ROLDA UK can be a fulfilling experience, whether you’re hosting an event, taking on a challenge, or running an online campaign. No matter the approach, every penny raised will make a difference for animals in need. So, choose a challenge that excites you, invite others to join in, and enjoy the journey of helping animals in need. Together, let’s make a lasting, positive impact.

Every April 4th, people worldwide recognise World Stray Animals Day, a day devoted to raising awareness about the millions of stray animals struggling to survive on the streets, in neighbourhoods, and in urban areas worldwide. For ROLDA, this day serves as a powerful reminder of why our work is important and why, with the help of our supporters, we continue to advocate for the voiceless animals in need.
Stray Animals’ Reality
For many strays, life on the streets is an endless struggle. These animals often lack reliable access to food, clean water, and medical care. Exposure to disease, harsh weather conditions, and the dangers of traffic only adds to their suffering. Sadly, most stray animals also endure neglect, abuse, or simply the indifference of passersby. In Romania, where ROLDA operates, the stray animal population is in the hundreds of thousands, and many animals face grim conditions every day.
At ROLDA, we witness the profound impact that street life has on these vulnerable creatures. Nevertheless, we also observe their resilience and spirit. With the proper support and care, many of these animals can lead fulfilling, happy lives—and that’s where our work commences.
Why ROLDA’s Work Matters
ROLDA was established with a clear mission: to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome stray animals while creating long-term solutions to end the cycle of suffering. Throughout the years, we have developed a variety of programmes that address the root causes of stray animal overpopulation while providing immediate support to those in need.
1. Rescue and Rehabilitation
Our dedicated team of rescuers responds to calls for animals in distress. Once an animal is brought to one of our shelters, they receive a thorough medical check-up, vaccinations, and any necessary treatments. Our team works tirelessly to rehabilitate animals physically and emotionally, providing them with a safe, caring environment where they can begin to heal.
2. Rehoming and Adoption Programs
For every animal we rescue, we strive to find them a forever home. Our adoption programmes have successfully rehomed animals both locally and internationally. Every adoption is a triumph, not only for the individual animal but also for our organisation, as it enables us to free up space and resources for another animal in need.
3. Community Outreach and Education
Education is vital for breaking the cycle of stray animal overpopulation. Through our community outreach programmes, we educate local communities about responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying and neutering, and how to care for animals humanely. We aim to foster a culture of compassion that values the welfare of all animals.
4. Spay/Neuter Initiatives
Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce stray populations. Our sterilisation initiatives help prevent future generations of stray animals from being born into hardship. By controlling the population, we reduce the number of animals suffering on the streets and lessen the strain on ROLDA and local shelters.
How You Can Help
On World Stray Animals Day, we invite you to take action and stand with ROLDA in our mission. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:
● Adopt, Don’t Shop: If you are considering adding a pet to your family, consider adoption options. Adopting from ROLDA or a local shelter gives a homeless animal a second chance.
● Sponsor an Animal: Our monthly sponsorship program allows you to provide ongoing support for an animal in need. Your sponsorship helps cover the costs of food, medical care, and shelter for one of our rescues.
● Spread Awareness: Share our message on social media, talk to friends and family, and encourage others to support stray animal welfare. Awareness leads to action, and your voice can inspire others to get involved.
● Donate: Every donation, big or small, makes a direct impact. With your help, we can continue rescuing, feeding, and rehoming animals in need.
A Hopeful Future for Strays
World Stray Animals Day reminds us of the work that remains, but it also gives us hope. With compassionate supporters like you, ROLDA can make a meaningful impact, one animal at a time. Together, we can envision a future where every stray animal is safe, cared for, and valued.
Let’s unite this World Stray Animals Day to reaffirm our commitment to these vulnerable animals. With your support, we can continue to be a beacon of hope for strays, offering them the love, care, and second chances they deserve.
As winter sets in, the cold months bring extra challenges for our pets and stray animals. At ROLDA UK, we know how vital it is to keep our furry friends safe, warm, and comfortable when temperatures drop. Whether you’re a pet owner or someone looking out for strays, these winter care tips will help you support cats and dogs during the season.
1. Create Warm Shelter
- For Pets at Home: Make sure pets have a warm, draft-free place to sleep, such as a cosy bed off the floor and away from cold tiles or unheated rooms. Adding extra blankets can provide additional warmth and comfort.
- For Strays: Stray animals often lack sufficient shelter. If you can, set up a small, insulated shelter with materials like straw, which stays dry and helps retain body heat. A sturdy cardboard or plastic box with a covered entrance can offer strays a much-needed refuge from the elements.
2. Avoid Over-Grooming and Bathing
- In winter, it’s essential to let pets’ natural oils build up in their coats to help insulate them. Avoid frequent baths, which strip these oils. Brush pets regularly to keep their coats healthy and untangled, which also helps with warmth.
- For Cats: Remember that cats’ winter coats are thicker and shouldn’t be trimmed or shaved in colder months.
3. Protect Paws from Cold and Salt
- Cold pavements, ice, and salt can harm pets’ paws. After walks, rinse or wipe their paws to remove salt or chemical de-icers. If your dog tolerates them, consider pet-safe boots that protect from frostbite, ice, and salt-related injuries.
- Paw Care for Strays: Stray animals’ paws also suffer in winter. Keep an eye out for signs of injury and, if possible, leave out a small bowl of warm (not hot) water for strays to help thaw their paws after being out in icy weather.
4. Keep Outdoor Cats Safe
- Cats may hide under or even inside car engines for warmth. Before starting your car, tap the hood or honk the horn to encourage any cats hiding underneath to move away.
- If you’re feeding stray cats, try to keep a consistent feeding schedule and place food in a sheltered spot. Cats generally accept wet food, but it can freeze quickly, so consider mixing in dry food on frigid days.
5. Adjust Food and Water Intake
- For Pets at Home: Pets burn more calories by staying warm and may need extra food during the winter. Consult your vet for specific guidance on adjusting your pet’s winter diet.
- For Strays: Leave food in well-insulated containers, and check that water bowls haven’t frozen. Heated water bowls are an excellent option for regularly feeding strays in cold areas.
6. Ensure Visibility and Safety on Walks
- Winter Gear for Dogs: Consider a warm, weather-resistant jacket for outdoor walks if your dog has a short coat. Reflective collars or leashes help keep your dog visible in low light.
- Leash and Visibility for Strays: If you’re near areas where strays frequently roam, drive slowly and watch for them, especially near sunrise and sunset when visibility is lower.
7. Mind the Antifreeze and Toxic Chemicals
- Antifreeze, commonly used in winter, is highly toxic to pets and strays. Unfortunately, its sweet taste can attract animals. Clean up any spills immediately, and store antifreeze and other chemicals securely out of reach.
8. Offer Community Support for Strays
- Community care is essential during the colder months. If you see a stray animal struggling or injured, contact your local shelter or ROLDA UK for guidance. You could also join or start a neighborhood group dedicated to feeding and caring for stray animals during winter.
- Leave blankets, pet-safe heating pads, or temporary shelters in areas where stray animals are known to gather.
9. Stay Indoors During Severe Weather
- For Pets: On especially cold days, keep walks brief and avoid leaving pets outside for extended periods. Indoor play and exercise will keep them entertained and safe from the chill.
- For Strays: During extreme weather, consider opening your garage or shed slightly for a warm refuge if you feel safe doing so. Strays will often gravitate toward any shelter they can find, so keeping spaces accessible can make a difference.
10. Foster or Adopt if You’re Able
- Winter is an ideal time to open your home to a pet in need. Fostering, even temporarily, can give animals a break from the harsh outdoor environment, while adoption offers a permanent loving home. Check out ROLDA UK’s foster and adoption programs if you are considering this rewarding option!
